Design Indaba Cape Town 2009

From near and far, they’ve come in droves to check out the luscious local curves, the fine, sculpted structures, the perfect lines…

No, we are not merely talking about the tourists gawking at the bikini-clad local ladies catching some sun at Clifton. We’re of course referring to one of the most highly anticipated events on the local calendar: the 2009 Design Indaba Expo which kicks off at the Cape Town Convention Centre today, Friday, 27 February.

Until Sunday, 1 March, attendees will experience a veritable feast for the senses by the 260 exhibitors who will show off new designs in advertising, craft, décor, film, fashion, graphic design, interiordesign, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media – all under the same roof. All the work is conceived and manufactured in South Africa. There are no derivatives or imports.

So come and see the all-day fashion shows, sample the finest in food and drink, attend short films, talks and product launches and get to hobnob with the designers in person!

Cape Town Valentine’s Day Activities

Many guys out there have probably already been subjected to subtle (or not so subtle) hints and reminders that Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year.

Yes, dudes. THIS Saturday.

Luckily, those in Cape Town already have a leg up, because few places in the world offer a more breathtakingly romantic backdrop. On 14 February, the Mother City is also bound to be considerably balmier than gay Paree! (Which can be your excuse for not whisking your significant other abroad this year.)

Of course, if she had wanted you to fly her to another summery clime in the Southern Hemisphere, you’re on your own, excuse-wise.

Our best advice is to just give her such a good time right here, that she’ll promptly forget about the existence of any other place, or – and here’s your goal – any other person.

Fortunately for all of us, Cape Town literally teems with activities that are fit for seduction and – better yet – a tight budget!

There are the usual suspects: an intimate picnic for two on Clifton at sunset. A hand-in-hand stroll along windswept Blouberg Beach.

Before getting lost in each other’s eyes over a candlelit dinner, you can always find each other in the Serendipity Maze in Mouille Point, next to the Lighthouse.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Capetonian lovers!
