The road less travelled - R62

We’re getting some information together about this special route. It’s an alternative way to get from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn and really a spectacular drive.

Barrydale

Barrydale is about 2.5 hours drive from Cape Town through scenic wine farms (Robertson Valley) on to the R62. It’s a beautiful little town nestled between mountains and farms, with amazing views and people.

Visit Lentelus, a Farm Stay Bed & Breakfast in Barrydale for an amazing experience.

Also be sure to visit the Fish & Chips shop (and no they don’t sell fish & chips funny enough) for the coolest curios and stuff you can only find in a town like Barrydale.

Further the Jam Tarts is a quaint little restaurant on the main road that serves up a mean pizza and the people are extremely friendly.

Also visit the Warmwaterberg Spa, natural hot springs just outside town and don’t forget Ronnie’s Sex Shop on the way of course. Many a lady have lost their knickers in the early hours of the morning, but it’s actually just a pub that’s world famous for it’s amazing venue and parties.

Well worth a visit!

Cape Summer ‘Slow’

The Cape Summer Show that was destined to run until the 24th of December has been cancelled early due to low turnout by visitors. It was attributed to extreme weather (high winds) and death threats received by the organisers. The show exhibitors were highly upset at the low turnout and are seeking legal advice for further action. It was highly publicised that up to 500k visitors would be attending the show. Unfortunately there seemed to have been a marketing blunder…

The wind’s not letting up at the moment and we’re probably seeing more wind than previous years in December. The tourists are all out though and most hotspots are buzzing with anticipation of the pending holiday season.

Cape Town Hotspots of the moment:

Blue Peter Hotel (Blouberg Strand) - great sundowner spot about 20 minutes drive along the West Coast.
La Med (Camps Bay) - Close to town sundowner spot, next to Clifton 4th beach.
Clifton 4th Beach - When the wind’s blowing this is the spot to go, nice and sheltered

Western Cape

Additional Info:
Registration opens at 06:30 with free coffee and Bio Zest.

The Start / Finish is at the Wine Village in the Hemel-en-Aarde Craft Village at the entrance to Hermanus.

The 21.1 km event starts at 08:30 and follows the R320 road into the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley towards Caledon. There is a steady climb between vineyards and olive trees on the Hamilton Russell Vineyards Wine Estate, up onto Rotary Drive and along the crest of the Raed-na-Gael mountains. A roller coaster up and down ascent leads runners to Hennie-se-Kop. The view is breathtaking, the track taxing. The route home takes runners along Rotary Drive, past the waterworks, around the Preekstoel, down Leg-break Pass and rejoins the R320 back to the Wine Village.

The 11 km run starts at 08:45 and takes runners on the R320. 3 kms on, runners turn right into Patryskloof. The grassy climb is only the beginning of more to come. The jeeptrack leads runners through some of the most beautiful fynbos and protea bush. A right turn onto Rotary Drive and it is time to relax a bit. Here runners can enjoy the spectacular view of Walkerbay and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Then down and around the Preekstoel, down Leg-break Pass and back home.

A 5 km Fun Run starts at 09:00 and takes runners into the valley for an easy relaxing jog. Old and young will enjoy the beautiful scenery. The 5km run is push- and wheel chair friendly, but by no means easy. Bear in mind that the road is uneven and sandy in parts.

The 11 km and 5 km routes are very walker friendly and we invite all walkers of all ages to join us.

A free cup of hot soup and a roll awaits all participants at the end of the race.

The “Silence the Violence” march is in response to the wave of crime
and violence currently sweeping Cape Town.
We are seeking your support.

Please join us in numbers at the Good Hope Centre at 11am
on Thursday May 4. The march will start at noon.
And send a message of support to shelley@capetalk.co.za.

Bring along banners or placards and let’s help turn the tide against crime.

Attached is a map of the route and below are all the details.
Please contact Shelley Doyle at Cape Talk on (021) 446-4771 for further info.

MEDIA RELEASE FROM 567 mw CAPETALK: CAPE TOWN RESIDENTS
IN PEACE MARCH TO SHOW THEIR COLLECTIVE OPPOSITION TO CRIME

CAPETONIANS, concerned by the levels of crime and violence across
the city, are being offered an opportunity to make a symbolic statement against the
carnage by participating in a silent peace march on May 4.

Organised by CapeTalk, the “Silence the Violence” initiative follows a dramatic increase
in gang violence, a host of gruesome murders and ongoing general crime in Cape
Town and its surrounds over recent weeks.

CapeTalk station manger Colleen Louw said hundreds of callers to the station
recently had expressed anger and deep concern at crime levels
in the city and had expressed a desire to do something about the situation.

“They are telling us that crime levels are unacceptable and they want to
do something about it. We are providing a platform for them to do so.”

“This is not a protest, but through this symbolic and silent walk for peace we are
encouraging ordinary Capetonians to play a part in the resolution of this dire situation
and to collectively take action and show their solidarity with all efforts aimed at
normalising the situation.”

“We are urging ordinary citizens and organised groups to come out of their homes
and their offices en masse on May 4 and to make a stand,” said Louw.

“Let this be the first step towards a crime-free Mother City,” she added.

Participants will gather at the Good Hope Centre from 11 am
on Thursday, May 4. The sounding of the Noon Day Gun will mark the start
of the one kilometre march which will move along Strand Street, into Adderley
Street and end in Darling Street outside the Cape Town City Hall. See the website below for a map.

The big South African blog off

I’ve entered the big South African Blog Off. And shall I see this blog get the attention it really deserves? Will the hours and hours of blog sweating pay off? Only time will tell. BTW, there’s a street party in Long Street, which is probably now in full swing. If you’re up late and reading this, get out there NOW! Dunno what I’m doing here at 00:23…

PS - Got a new digital camera. Expect some pictures of Cape Town soon!

Cape Town Power Play

Tips avoiding irritation (to a limit) of power cuts:

  1. If the power is out, work out a flexi-time schedule with your boss and go in to work later to miss the traffic gridlocks.
  2. Stock up on gas and candle lighting, you can always use it out camping or for a romantic evening…
  3. Back up your computer work regularly onto DVD or CD to avoid loss of data. The best is to get automated backup systems in place.
  4. Alternatively get an UPS (uninterrupted power supply) which will allow you to save your files before shutting down your computer.
  5. If you can’t afford downtime at all, get a backup generator.
  6. Get a car charger kit for your cellphone.
  7. Visit Camps Bay, Cape Town for sundowners to ‘maximise available daylight’ ;-)
  8. Smile, everyone else is in the same boat with you…
