Summer living in Cape Town

Summer is here and since ‘tis the season during which the Mother City practically turns into one huge party venue, there is no lack of exciting activities to keep everyone entertained and busy from early in the morning or all through the night.

As tourists from around the world descend upon the city, Cape Town flings open her doors and offers something that will appeal to everyone.

One of Cape Town’s main attractions even offer significant discounts this time of year. This season, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has extended their renowned Summer Sunset Special to run for two extra months (until 28 February 2009). The Sunset Special allows adults and children (under 18 years) to travel to the top of Table Mountain at half price from 6pm. At the discounted rate, adults pay R72.50 for a return ticket, while the children’s  rate is R38.

Of course, you could always get to the top of the mountain for free… when you climb it!

Speaking of things to do for free (which we’re all for, especially in this global economic climate): the amphitheatre at the V&A Waterfront offers regular and varied performances (from puppet shows to jazz). Some of it are even free to the public. For a schedule, visit their official website here.

If live music is indeed what you’re after, you can also catch some fantastic acts at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden’s Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts every Sunday until the end of March. People can pack a picnic basket and go and chill out on the lawn. More details here.

ATM’s and travellers cheques

I was recently asked about the availability of ATM’s in Cape Town and where to cash in travellers cheques. Well, ATM’s are widely available and accept all major cards. With regards to cashing in travellers cheques (checks for Americans), some major hotels will accept your travellers cheques, but there are also many exchange bureaus available around the city (usually at the big banks like ABSA, First National Bank, Nedbank, Standard Bank etc) to exchange your travellers cheques for cash. You won’t have any problems spending money! If you have any other questions about travelling to Cape Town, just post a comment here and I will answer in as much detail as possible…
